Frequently Asked Questions
You Ask — We Answer
Do I need to be enrolled in a random drug and alcohol consortium?
If your company has vehicles with GVW over 26,000 lbs. or vehicles that transport 15 or more passengers, you are required to be enrolled in a random drug and alcohol consortium.
What happens if my company is not enrolled?
You will automatically fail your new entrant safety audit and will have your operating authority suspended.
What is a pre-employment test?
The DOT requires all drivers to take a drug screening, and receive a negative drug test result, prior to employment or in the case of owner operators, before beginning operation. If a driver has been enrolled in a consortium within the last 30 days, they do not need the pre-employment test.
Where will the testing take place?
DOT Consortium USA will schedule a test at a location convenient to the driver. We use the Quest Diagnostic Laboratories certified collection sites, and there are over 12,000 throughout the US.
What happens if a driver is chosen for a random test?
If selected for a random test the driver must report immediately to a testing facility. If there is a DER (Designated Employee Representative or supervisor) they have until the end of the month to notify the driver of the random test selection. Once notified the driver must report immediately to a testing facility.
What things will put my company in noncompliance with the DOT drug and alcohol regulations?
Your company will be in violation if:
-
You have no drug and alcohol testing policy;
-
You are not enrolled in a random testing consortium;
-
You are using a driver that has not completed a drug test with a negative result;
-
You are using a driver who has previously tested positive and has not completed the return-to-duty process required by the DOT.
Under what circumstances are CDL drivers required to be tested following an accident?
-
Any time the accident results in a fatality;
-
If the driver receives a citation and someone is injured and receives medical attention away from the scene;
-
If the driver receives a citation and one or more vehicles has to be towed from the scene.
